Laundry Essentials for those with eczema or sensitive skin

I will be the first to say that switching laundry detergents and cleaning products can be hard, especially when you’ve used something that you’ve liked for so long. When Liam was a baby I used Dreft baby detergent and absolutely loved the smell! Little did I know that would be the last time I use anything scented again to wash my laundry for the foreseeable future!

Here are some laundry essentials and tips if you are struggling with sensitive skin or eczema:

  1. Find an unscented laundry detergent. There are many non-toxic detergents out there, and some that are so pricey! This is one area that we have chosen to stick with Everspring unscented detergent sold at Target for a very decent price. We tried out Molly Suds (another nice non-toxic laundry detergent) but it seemed to flare Liam so we just put it on hold. If your overwhelmed, let your first decision to be a detergent without any scent. There are some detergents now that use essential oils, so if you tolerate oils that’s an option too!

  2. Wash what you can on hot, and dry on high heat. Things like bed sheets, pajamas and towels that are used and worn a lot can accumulate dust and bacteria especially if you have any infection or overgrowth going on. We try and wash bath towels, sheets and pajamas as often we can to keep the dust and bacteria at bay.

  3. A side note for clothes- cotton is best! Especially sheets and pajamas since they spend so much time in and on those.

  4. Throw out any drier sheets! These may be even more problematic than laundry detergent for some because it lingers so strongly on the clothes. There are other ways to help with static such as wool laundry balls. If you miss the scent, you can add some essential oils onto the wool ball before throwing it in!

  5. Air drying clothes can be so nice during some seasons, but a word of caution against it if you little one has environmental or seasonal allergies. The pollen or whatever else is in the air can stick onto the clothes so if you’re seeing a flare after air drying outside that could be why.

  6. We love our stain remover from Puracy. They have a refill bag so you only buy the bottle once and then can continue to fill it up by buying the refill at a bit of a lower cost.

  7. If you like using dish soap for stains or oil our go-to is a clean unscented dish soap on Thrive. They have amazing prices on cleaners such as non-toxic dishwasher detergent, toilet bowl cleaner and all purpose wipes. click here for 40% off your first order <3

When it comes to doing laundry with eczema, less is more. It can be hard to say good-bye to the scents but we have personally felt so much better after getting rid of them and spend less money on all the different laundry products!
